On the 50th anniversary (October 4, 2007) of the successful launch of Sputnik-1, a special German Post Office branch was opened in Neuhardenberg for the issue of the commemorative stamp.
To mark the Sputnik anniversary, a display was held in the Heimatverein Neuhardenberg e.V. permanent exhibition, and this also commemorated the first rocket-assisted take-off (Heinkel He 111) and the first flight of an aircraft using an auxiliary rocket engine (Heinkel He 112).
Test pilot at the controls of each was Erich Warsitz, later the world's first jet pilot. For his flying achievements, his memory was honoured with a special stamp issue by the German Post Office.
